If you haven’t noticed yet, going green is making its way to the top. Electric cars, reusable grocery bags, not eating meat, making eco-friendly choices–these are the new trends. Eating green is just as important, and more and more people are doing so. Plant foods are rich with phytochemicals which are compounds that are believed to protect cells from damage that could lead to cancer.
Broccoli
Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin K, fiber and potassium which all work together to keep your organ systems happy and healthy. Specifically, broccoli contains sulforaphane, which supports your body’s defense systems and targets multiple aspects of cancer development including abnormal cell growth, cancer cell-to-cell communication and formation of tumor blood vessels. Some studies show it can destroy different types of cancer and prevent progression.
Wheatgrass Juice
Drinking wheatgrass juice was a big trend around the 1970’s because of a holistic-health practitioner named Ann Wigmore. Now, it’s starting to make a comeback. It’s rich in plant compounds and studies suggest it can minimize some of the serious side effects of cancer treatment, contribute to cancer-cell death and improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Although this is not hard evidence of beating cancer, experts say there’s it’s good to add wheatgrass juice to your morning routine.
Olive Oil
When you think of anticancer food, I’m sure olive oil is not the first thing that comes to mind. Known mostly for its role as an anti-inflammatory food, researchers suggest it should also have a place as an anticancer food. A 2019 study from PLOS ONE shows that olive oil can kill cancer cells due to a key compound known as oleocanthal, which gives oil its “bite”. The more oleocanthal/bite it has, the more cancer-fighting potential it has.
